A placement method of ground stations for optical satellite communications considering cloud attenuation

This letter studies a placement method of optical ground stations (OGSs) to realize site diversity in satellite-to-ground communications under cloud attenuation. Using meteorological ERA-Interim database, the monthly average attenuation over Japan during 2018–2022 is calculated. Based on obtained results, set candidates for OGS proposed, including places with lowest attenuation, major cities, and JAXA observatory station. Then, greedy heuristic presented determine sub-optimal OGSs. Simulation results reveal that sufficiently high system availabilities are achieved when performed from proposed candidates.
